On October 23 of every year, Thailand celebrates Chulalongkorn Day. Chulalongkorn was one of the most important figureheads in Thai history, and the day is taken to commemorate the day of his death.

History of Chulalongkorn Day

When Chulalongkon’s father -who was on the throne at the time- died, Chulalongkon inhereted the title to the throne. He was only 15 when he took to the throne, and was thereafter known as Rama V – the fifth monarch of Siam (Thailand) to come from the house of Chakri.

During his long 42 year rule, Chulalongkorn brought some sweeping changes to Thailand in the 19th century. He incorporated into Thailand the systems he learned from western governments. He also improved dimplomatic relations with France, Britain, Usa nd Russia. His children were also sent to the West to be educated.

Chulalongkon also pushed for the abolition of slavery and other modernisation such as building a new railway, and establishing post / telegraph systems. He also boasted important improvements in health and education.During the age of colonialism, the King had to adapt his foreign policy to maintain a balance between the opposing powers. By fostering good relations with other countries – particularly the bigger colonial powers – he was able to maintain Thailand’s independence throughout this difficult time.

His death was a terrible blow for the nation of Thailand which had looked to the king for so many years for guidance, and who had brought about so much positive change. For this reason, his death is still commemorated to this day.
